🎶 Lyrics

Oh, little mouse, so small, so shy,
I see the fear that fills your eye.
No need to run, don’t hurry away,
I wouldn’t harm you, not today.

I know the world’s been cruel to you,
Your home is lost, the winds blew through.
But we’re the same, both flesh and bone,
You’re not meant to be alone.

Oh, the best-laid plans of mice and men,
Fall apart and fail again.
What we dream just slips away,
Leaving sorrow in its place.

You stole a grain to stay alive,
I’d never chase, you need to thrive.
A little meal, a place to hide,
Should not be something you’re denied.

But winter’s near, your home is torn,
Your shelter’s gone, the field is worn.
The plow came crashing through your walls,
Now there’s nothing left at all.

Oh, the best-laid plans of mice and men,
Fall apart and fail again.
What we build can turn to dust,
Fate is cruel, but still, we trust.

But little mouse, you’re luckier still,
You live today, you feel the thrill.
No past regrets, no fear ahead,
Unlike me, lost in my head.

So run along, go find your way,
Live in the now, don’t fear the day.
For while I grieve for what has been,
You don’t recall where you have been.

The idea
#

Burns’s plow and mouse rewritten as nocturnal electronic tenderness. The small shy creature need not run; the speaker claims kinship—“both flesh and bone”—and refuses the role of farmer-destroyer for a day. Best-laid plans of mice and men still fail; dreams slip into sorrow; winter nears; the field is torn. Yet the moral turn is gentle: a stolen grain is survival, not crime.

The sting arrives late: the mouse is luckier, living without past regret or future dread, while the human remains “lost in my head.” Atmospheric night electronics can hold that philosophical sigh without sermonizing. Run along, live now—the elegy is for the speaker’s overthinking more than for the ruined nest. Fate is cruel, trust persists, and memory is the human tax the mouse does not pay.
