Lyrics

What thou dost build,
Shall fall to dust.
What thou dost love,
Shall fade, as must.

Gold turns to sand,
Crowns turn to clay.
The grave makes kings,
And slaves the same.

Pulvis et umbra sumus,
Tempus fugit, mors certa.
Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?
In aeternum, silentium.

Fair face shall pale,
Proud form shall bend.
Beauty is brief,
Ash is the end.

All songs are hushed,
All fires wane.
The earth reclaims,
The dark shall reign.

Pulvis et umbra sumus,
Tempus fugit, mors certa.
Ubi sunt qui ante nos fuerunt?
In aeternum, silentium.

Where are they now,
The ones before?
Their names are wind,
Their crowns no more.

So draw thy breath,
So spend thy flame.
For in the grave,
All is the same.

Pulvis et umbra sumus,
Tempus fugit, mors certa.
In aeternum, silentium…

The idea
#

Memento mori set to trance: what you build falls to dust, gold to sand, crowns to clay; the grave equalizes kings and slaves. Latin refrains—pulvis et umbra sumus, time flees, death is certain—turn the dancefloor into a chapel of ash.

Beauty is brief; all songs hush; earth reclaims. Where are those who came before? Their names are wind. Yet the lyric still urges breath and flame spent fully, because in the grave all is the same.

Uplifting drive under that message creates a strange double vision: bodies moving while the text reminds them they are shadow. I find that tension more interesting than pure gloom or pure celebration.
